Western Harbour (Västra Hamnen) in Malmö, where the experienced guides of Malmö City will take you during the Sustainability event, is a striking example of the successful implementation of the ideas of sustainable living.
From Kockums Shipyard, the industrial monster
and environmental disaster, Western Harbour turned into a great tourist
attraction and an internationally leading example of environmental adaptation
of a densely built urban environment. The new city area has been built with a
fundamental ecological approach to planning, building and construction. The
first stage of the new neighbourhood`s development, Bo01, was built in 2001 and
demonstrates several integrated solutions for sustainability. For example, the
energy concept has attracted a great deal of interest: 100% locally produced
renewable energy in Bo01 proves that the zero CO2 vision is possible.
The tour, organized by Malmo City with the
cooperation with UF Malmo, will inform you about the renewable energy system
for Bo01 and illustrate the results of using a green planning tool called the
Green Space Factor as well as local storm water management, which helped to
create completely new, sustainable urban environment and to renew the city’s
ties with the sea. Moreover, you will be taken to see World Trade Centre Malmö,
the most energy-efficient office building in Scandinavia. You will also hear
about on-going adaptation and mitigation in this part of the city, future
sustainable projects and learn plenty more interesting facts!
The tour will take place on April 26 and on
April 27. It starts at 10.00 and ends at 11.30 both days, so you can choose
which day suits you best. Due to the limited number of seats, you are kindly
